Exosome and Salmon DNA Facials, Explained
Exosomes and salmon DNA have gone from research labs to your feed in record time. They sound futuristic, and the claims can get big. Here's a clear-eyed look at what they are, what they may help with and what to expect in the treatment room.
What are exosomes?
Exosomes are tiny particles that cells release to send messages to each other. They carry proteins, lipids and other signaling molecules. In skincare, exosome products are applied to the skin, often right after microneedling, when the skin is most receptive.
The idea is that these signals may support your skin's own repair process. Early studies and plenty of clients report results like a smoother texture, a more even tone and a faster-looking recovery after treatment.
Research is still young. Exosome products aren't FDA-approved to treat any condition, so be wary of anyone promising dramatic or guaranteed results.
What is salmon DNA (PDRN)?
PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a purified ingredient made from salmon DNA. It's been studied for years in wound healing and has become popular in Korean aesthetics for skin rejuvenation.
In a facial, PDRN may help support hydration, elasticity and a healthier-looking skin barrier. Many people choose it for dullness, fine lines, texture and that tired, depleted look.
Who these treatments are for
They're often a good fit if you want:
Smoother texture and a more even tone
A boost in glow and hydration
Support for the look of fine lines
Better-looking recovery after microneedling or resurfacing
They're not a fit for everyone. Check with your provider if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or open wounds, or have a fish allergy (for PDRN).
What to expect
Most treatments pair the serum with microneedling, so expect some redness for a day or two, a bit like a mild sunburn. Use gentle products, skip actives and exfoliants for a few days and wear sunscreen every day. Skin often looks its best a few weeks after treatment, and many people book a series for the best results.
Skin health starts inside, too
Topical treatments work best when the rest of your body is supported. Hormones, gut health, nutrition and sleep all show up on your skin. At Sela, you can come in for a facial and, if you want, start a deeper conversation with a Wellness Exam. Explore our facials and resurfacing menu.
